PROJECT OVERVIEW

HumanRightsConnected.org is an international non-profit organization that works to increase access to human rights knowledge and resource-sharing. Their website MVP is a database of resources with organizations, activist toolkit, and law resources.

Over the course of 7 weeks, we analyzed the HRC current site, conducted user research, explored and restructured the current sitemap, evaluated and tested design solutions. The final deliverables included user research, personas, journey map, a mid-fidelity prototype with wireframes, style guide, and final high-fidelity mockups.

PROBLEM

HRC stakeholders identified a need to improve a user’s ability to access the resources on their website. From our team observations, their website has broken links, unclear CTAs, three disparate libraries with no one consolidated search option, an unreliable search, and inconsistent and ambiguous tagging and language.

MY ROLE

The UX LEAD (of a team of 5)

  • Strategized ideas for content restructure and user-flow concepts

  • Working closely with my team, we synthesized data gathered from stakeholder interviews and a survey to inform the development of personas

  • Created mid-fidelity wireframes and prototype for desktop version

  • Implemented a test plan with user scenarios to validate the design and functionality of content

  • Used findings to iterate towards a final solution

  • Presented final high fidelity mockups and assets

DEFINED SOLUTIONS

Keeping in mind the stakeholder's vision, we focused our design on easier access to the unique libraries of the current Human Rights Connected website and its functionality. The overall approach was to modernize the look using a responsive website design and a clear visual hierarchy of their CTAs (Donate, Login, Social Media, and Search).

We were able to demonstrate that by cleaning up their databases with a clearer, standardized, and simplified taxonomy it would allow for a more accurate and effective search outcome for their users. By implementing a federated search approach, we showed them how this concept would pull from all three library databases and create a sorted results page with site content recommendations.

Additionally, our design focused on "auto-suggest" and "auto-fill" allowing for better accessibility overall, especially in consideration of their global audience.

PERSONAS: Identified 2 types of users based on age and gender differences and how, why, and what they would access the website.

SKETCHES: Explored responsive website design concepts.

MID-FIDELITY WIREFRAMES: First iteration of website design concept which was then user tested with specific user scenarios.

HIGH-FIDELITY WIREFRAMES: Final iteration of website design concept with emphasis on new search functionality.

COMPONENTS: Designed various states for the navigation drop downs.

MOBILE WIREFRAMES & PROTOTYPE: Considering the global audience, we designed and created a mid-fidelity mobile prototype that was used during usability testing.
